Communications (Morse)

Course Overview

Adequate knowledge of the English language to enable the officer to use charts and other nautical publications, to understand meteorological information and messages concerning ship’s safety and operation, to communicate with other ships, coast stations and VTS centres and to perform the officer’s duties also with a multilingual crew, including the ability to use and understand the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (IMO SMCP)

Course Structure

This intensive 10-day course prepares students to be able to .transmit and receive, by Morse light, distress signal SOS as specified in Annex IV of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, as amended, and appendix 1 of the International Code of Signals, and visual signalling of single-letter signals as also specified in the International Code of Signals

Course Content

The course is a structured mixture of theory and practical application and covers three main areas:

  • The Standard Marine Navigational Vocabulary
  • International Code of Signals
  • MORSE Code
  • Navtex
  • Safety net
  • Flags
  • List of Radio Signals and MSI
  • Code of Signals/Nautical Publications
  • Navigational Reports
  • Message procedures
  • Navigational warnings

Prerequisites

  • Delegates must be at least 16 years of
  • Proficiency in English Language written and Verbal skills
  • Knowledge of the phonetic alphabet; computer keyboard literate.

Target Audience

All personnel employed onboard vessels who are involved with the communications and emergency response teams.

Certification

A Project Maritime Training STCW 2010 Manilla Compliant Statement of Results will be issued on delegate been found competent.

Revalidation

Every five years.

Venue

Held at Project Maritime Training, Saldanha Bay, South Africa.

Items to bring

  • Delegates must present photographic ID at the start of the course.
  • Accepted forms are government issued photographic identification, eg passport or identity document
  • Recognised in date medical certificate

Health

All delegates will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire prior to course commencement.
